# How the AI study assistant works

> Ask AI is a 24/7 study tool built into the student portal — here's what it does and how it works.

## What Ask AI is

Ask AI is an AI-powered study assistant available to every student in the app. It helps students work through problems when their tutor isn't available — late at night, on weekends, or any time they're stuck.

It is **not** a shortcut for getting answers. Ask AI walks students through problems step-by-step so they understand the method, not just the result.

## What students can do

### Ask a question in text

Students type a question or describe what they're stuck on. Ask AI responds with a guided explanation, working through the problem step by step.

### Upload a photo

Students take a photo of a problem from their textbook, worksheet, or exam paper and upload it. Ask AI reads the problem and provides step-by-step guidance.

Works for:

* Printed questions and diagrams
* Handwritten working (for feedback on where an error occurred)
* Calculator screenshots or CAS output

### Escalate to their tutor

If Ask AI can't fully resolve the confusion, students press **Save question** to add it to their saved questions list. It appears in the tutor's view at the start of the next session — the tutor can see exactly what the student was stuck on.

***

## How to access Ask AI

**Mobile app:** tap **Ask AI** in the bottom navigation bar (chat bubble icon).

**Desktop:** click **Ask AI** in the sidebar.

***

## Curriculum alignment

Ask AI's responses are tailored to the Australian curriculum — VCAA for VCE subjects, ACARA for junior years. It uses the correct formulas, notation, and exam expectations for each subject.

***

## What Ask AI is not

* It does not complete assignments for students — it guides them through the process.
* It does not replace the tutor. For persistent gaps or exam strategy, tutor sessions are the primary tool.
* It does not have access to a student's personal data outside the current conversation.

***

## For tutors: seeing what students asked

Tutors see questions a student saved from Ask AI sessions via **Teaching → \[student] → Saved Questions** — a useful starting point for each session.
