# Build a course: topics, materials and quizzes

> Choose which ClassQuill topics a class covers, add your own topics and materials, place quizzes, and share your organisation's course with classes, groups and 1:1 students.

Every class, group and 1:1 student has a **Curriculum** tab under **Learn**. It starts with the ClassQuill syllabus for the subject. You can then shape it to fit what you actually teach.

## Choose the topics this course covers

Every ClassQuill area and topic for the subject is in the course to start with. The first time you open a fresh course, ClassQuill offers to narrow it down.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Choose topics">
    Click **Choose topics** on the offer above the area cards, or on the dashed card at the end of the grid. Inside an area, click **Choose topics** under **+ New topic** in the topic list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tick what you teach">
    The dialog lists every area and topic as a checklist. Search to find one quickly. Untick anything you don't teach.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save changes**. You can reopen the dialog and change your selection at any time.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Edit ClassQuill areas and topics

ClassQuill areas and topics work like the ones you create yourself. Use the **⋮** menu on an area card or a topic row to:

* **Rename** it for this course. The original name stays the same everywhere else.
* **Reorder** it. Use **Edit order** on the area grid and drag, or **Move up** / **Move down** on a topic.
* **Remove from this course**. A toast lets you **Undo** straight away.

To add a topic of your own, click **+ New topic** at the top of the topic list.

### Removing at the organisation level

If you're an org admin editing your organisation's course, removing a ClassQuill area or topic takes it out of **every class, group and 1:1** in your organisation. ClassQuill asks you to confirm first. Teachers can't bring it back in their own class; only your organisation's staff can.

## Bring removed items back

Nothing you remove is deleted. Removed items are listed under **Removed from this course** at the foot of the page. Click **Restore** to put an item back.

This includes lessons that came from your organisation's course. You can remove one from your class without affecting anyone else, then restore it later.

## Add materials

Open a section, topic or page and click **+ Add**. You can add a file, video, link, text, Google Drive item, notes, practice questions, a quiz or a worksheet.

* **Area overview** — each ClassQuill area has an overview page that can hold materials too, for content that covers the whole area rather than one topic.
* **Library files** — files saved in your organisation's Library can be placed straight into a course.
* **Reorder** — drag sections on the grid to reorder them.

<Note>
  Deleting a section or topic you created removes its lessons from every place they appear, including classes that use your organisation's course.
</Note>

## Add a quiz

Click **+ Add** → **Quiz**, then pick a paper from your organisation's shelf, this course, or the ClassQuill catalogue. Set a **pass mark** and the number of **attempts** (1, 3 or unlimited).

* A student completes a quiz lesson by passing it. Opening it and submitting a blank paper doesn't count.
* Students don't see answers or worked solutions until the paper's release setting allows it.
* Quizzes in removed, deleted or locked lessons can't be started.
* Only your organisation's staff can edit your organisation's papers.

If you remove a quiz from a course, any attempts and marks students already have are kept.

## Use your organisation's course

Org admins can build a course once at the organisation level. Teachers then add its sections to a class, group or 1:1 from **Use your organisation's sections**.

* Adding a section links to it. Updates from your organisation reach the class automatically, and nothing is copied.
* Groups and 1:1 students only see organisation sections that were added for them.
* The option only appears for students you teach through your organisation. It's hidden for private students.
